CHARACTERS & PROFILES
Build persistent roleplay identities that can grow with your community and your story.

More Than a Discord Display Name

The GorBot Character System gives members a way to create and maintain persistent roleplay identities that exist beyond a temporary nickname or a single Discord message.

A character can have its own profile style, descriptive information, image, privacy settings, custom fields, and public-facing profile page. The system was originally shaped around the needs of Gor Ultima and Gorean roleplay, but it has expanded so characters can represent many different kinds of roleplay worlds.

Gorean, fantasy, tabletop, modern, science-fiction, and completely custom characters can all use the same underlying system while keeping information appropriate to their own setting.

Your character is meant to remain yours.

Profiles are persistent, editable, owner-controlled records designed to preserve the details that matter to your roleplay rather than forcing every character into one fixed template.

WHAT THE CHARACTER SYSTEM PROVIDES
Flexible profiles, persistent data, and enough structure to support very different roleplay communities.
Persistent Characters
Characters remain stored as part of your GorBot account data so they can be reopened, edited, presented, and used again without rebuilding the profile each time.
Flexible Profile Styles
Choose a profile format suited to the roleplay world you are using instead of being locked into one Gorean or fantasy-only character sheet.
Custom Fields
Add extra label-and-value fields when the selected template does not contain something your character needs. Up to 12 custom fields can be stored on a character.
Profile Images
Characters can include visual identity information so public and dashboard-facing profiles are easier to recognize and more useful for roleplay.
Privacy Controls
Public character presentation can be controlled so a character owner can decide which supported profile information should be visible outside private management views.
Public Profile Pages
Characters can be presented through community-facing profile pages that show populated information cleanly without filling the page with unused or empty fields.

CREATING A CHARACTER
Start with the identity that matters, then add detail as the character develops.

Characters are created through the GorBot dashboard and supported Discord character workflows.

A character does not need every possible field completed before it becomes useful. The profile system is designed so unused fields can remain empty, allowing a new character to begin with only the information the owner is ready to provide.

When creating a character, the most important choices are:

  • the character's identity;
  • the profile style that best matches the roleplay setting;
  • any initial profile information;
  • optional custom fields;
  • image and presentation information;
  • supported privacy settings.

Empty fields are intentionally omitted from normal profile presentation. This keeps finished profiles readable and prevents a newly-created character from looking incomplete simply because a template contains fields that are not relevant.

PROFILE STYLES
Six built-in styles provide structure without forcing every community into the same world.
Gorean
The original roleplay profile style, intended for characters participating in Gorean communities and the Gor Ultima roleplay ecosystem.
Standard RP
A general-purpose roleplay profile for communities that need character identity and descriptive information without setting-specific assumptions.
Fantasy RP
A profile structure intended for fantasy worlds where race, culture, profession, background, allegiance, or other setting information may be important.
Tabletop D&D
A tabletop-oriented profile style for campaign communities and characters that benefit from a more game-inspired roleplay structure.
Modern / Sci-Fi RP
Designed for modern, futuristic, technological, science-fiction, or other settings where traditional fantasy or Gorean labels would not be appropriate.
Custom / Freeform
A less prescriptive profile option for communities and characters that need maximum flexibility instead of a predefined roleplay structure.

SWITCHING PROFILE STYLES
Changing the way a profile is presented does not require throwing away the character's previous work.

Profile styles maintain their own stored template data.

This means a character can use one set of fields while configured as Gorean, switch to Standard RP and fill out a different set of information, then later switch back without intentionally deleting the previously stored Gorean profile data.

This is especially useful for:

  • communities experimenting with different profile layouts;
  • characters that participate in more than one type of roleplay;
  • profile migrations;
  • server owners changing how they organize their community;
  • users who want to compare styles before settling on one.

The active profile style determines which template-specific information is presented, while previously stored style-specific data remains available when returning to that style.

CUSTOM PROFILE FIELDS
When the template does not know your world, you can teach the profile what matters.

Each character can store up to 12 custom label/value fields in addition to the fields provided by the selected profile template.

Custom fields are useful for setting-specific information that GorBot could not reasonably predict for every community.

World-Specific Details
Add information such as faction, clan, vessel, organization, supernatural lineage, home settlement, rank, or any other detail important to the setting.
Character-Specific Details
Record unusual traits or important facts that apply to one character even when they do not belong in the standard profile template.
Community Flexibility
Communities can use the built-in templates as a foundation without waiting for a completely new GorBot profile type every time their lore introduces a new concept.

ONLY MEANINGFUL INFORMATION IS SHOWN
Profiles should read like profiles, not unfinished database forms.

Normal character presentation is built around filled-only rendering.

If a profile field is empty, it does not need to take up space on the finished profile. This allows the same template to support both simple and highly detailed characters without making either look awkward.

Historical placeholder-style values are also handled carefully. Older records may contain legacy defaults such as unspecified values that were created automatically by earlier versions of the system. GorBot is designed not to treat those synthetic defaults as meaningful character information unless they were actually stored as intentional profile values.

IMAGES, PRIVACY, AND PUBLIC PRESENTATION
A useful roleplay profile should be presentable without forcing every piece of stored information into public view.
Character Images
Visual identity can be associated with a character so dashboard cards and profile presentations are easier to recognize and more immersive.
Privacy Controls
Supported public-profile controls allow character owners to manage the exposure of template and custom profile information rather than assuming every stored field should be publicly visible.
Public Profiles
Community-facing character pages provide a cleaner way to share a roleplay identity than copying a long character sheet into Discord every time another player wants to learn about the character.

EDITING AND OWNERSHIP
Characters are persistent records, but they are not frozen records.

A character owner can return to the Character Library to manage and update their characters as the roleplay changes.

Profiles can evolve over time:

  • biographies can be expanded;
  • template fields can be changed;
  • profile styles can be switched;
  • custom fields can be added or updated;
  • presentation information can be adjusted;
  • privacy choices can be revised.

Character mutation paths are validated through the GorBot application layer, while RackNerd's shared state acts as the authoritative persistent store for the managed GorBot platform.

This architecture allows character information to remain available across the managed GorBot node fleet instead of belonging only to whichever Discord node happened to process the original request.

CHARACTER CAPACITY
Enough space for long-running roleplay without encouraging uncontrolled record growth.
Current supported maximum: 150 characters per Discord account.
The current character creation ceiling is 150. Existing valid legacy character records are preserved; the lower supported ceiling is intended to limit new character capacity rather than destructively renumber or remove older records.

THE CHARACTER LIBRARY
Your central place to find and manage the characters attached to your account.

The Character Library is the dashboard view used to work with stored characters.

As the number of characters grows, the library supports organized browsing rather than requiring every profile to be loaded into one enormous page. Character records can be presented through a paginated interface and searched so older or less frequently used characters remain practical to manage.

The Character Library reads from GorBot's authoritative shared state so temporary relay recovery should not cause a user's stored character collection to disappear from the dashboard.

USING CHARACTERS WITH DISCORD
Profiles are designed to support roleplay where the community actually gathers.

Character profile presentation is available to GorBot's Discord-side systems as well as the web dashboard.

The active profile style and populated profile information determine how supported profile presentations are built. Empty profile data is omitted so Discord-facing profile output remains useful instead of becoming a long wall of unused labels.

GorBot's broader roleplay platform is being developed so character identity can increasingly participate in other connected systems rather than existing only as an isolated profile card.

CHARACTERS AND NPCS
They share profile technology, but they represent different kinds of identities.
Characters
Player-owned roleplay identities attached to a Discord account and managed through the Character Library.
Non-player identities managed through the NPC Database, with their own ownership, sharing, profile, and future intelligent-NPC possibilities.

COMMON QUESTIONS
A foundation for the future GorBot Support section.
Do I have to fill out every field?
No. Empty fields are omitted from normal presentation. Fill in the information that is useful to your roleplay and leave the rest blank.
Can I change profile styles later?
Yes. Profile styles can be switched, and style-specific stored data is designed to remain isolated so returning to a previous style does not intentionally erase its saved fields.
What if my setting needs a field GorBot does not have?
Use a custom field. Each character can store up to 12 custom label/value fields.
Why is an empty or old default value not shown?
GorBot suppresses empty fields and historical synthetic defaults from normal presentation so profiles show intentional character information rather than placeholder data.
How many characters can I create?
The current supported creation ceiling is 150 characters per Discord account.
Is this only for Gorean roleplay?
No. Gorean roleplay is the system's origin, but the available templates include general, fantasy, tabletop, modern/science-fiction, and custom/freeform options.

A character should be able to grow without outgrowing its profile.
Create the identity. Choose the structure. Add what matters. Change it as the story changes.
