NPC Database

From Gor Wiki

NPC DATABASE
Create, organize, share, and preserve the non-player identities that help a roleplay world feel alive.

A Persistent Home for Roleplay NPCs

The GorBot NPC Database provides a central place to create and manage non-player identities used throughout a roleplay community.

An NPC can have its own name, image, profile style, descriptive information, custom fields, sharing state, and public-facing profile. Unlike a temporary NPC description posted once into a Discord channel, a database record can be returned to, edited, cloned, published, and reused as the roleplay world continues to grow.

The system shares much of its profile technology with Characters & Profiles, but NPCs have their own ownership and management model.

NPCs can be more than disposable names in a scene.

The database is designed to preserve recurring merchants, guards, rulers, rivals, slaves, caste members, guild representatives, creatures, story characters, contacts, and other identities that may matter again later.

WHAT THE NPC DATABASE PROVIDES
Structured profiles for recurring world characters without forcing every NPC into the same mold.
Persistent NPC Records
NPCs remain stored as reusable records instead of disappearing when a scene ends or a Discord message scrolls away.
Ownership
NPCs have an owner who can return to the database to update, manage, clone, publish, or remove the records they control.
Flexible Profiles
NPCs use the same multi-style profile foundation as characters, allowing the database to support Gorean, fantasy, tabletop, modern, science-fiction, and custom settings.
Custom Fields
Up to 12 custom label/value fields allow owners to record setting-specific details that are not included in the selected profile template.
Images & Public Profiles
NPC portraits and public profile pages help recurring non-player identities become easier to recognize, share, and reference during roleplay.
Global Publishing
Owners can publish suitable NPCs into GorBot's broader global NPC listing so they can be discovered beyond a single local server context.

CREATING AN NPC
Start with identity and purpose, then add the detail the roleplay actually needs.

NPCs are created through the GorBot NPC Database interface.

The owner can define the NPC's identity and choose the profile style that best matches the world in which the NPC exists. Additional information can be added immediately or filled in later as the NPC becomes more important.

A useful NPC record may include:

  • name and core identity;
  • profile style;
  • portrait or image;
  • descriptive profile fields;
  • custom world-specific information;
  • ownership information;
  • sharing or publishing state.

Not every NPC requires a massive biography. Empty profile fields are omitted from normal presentation so a simple recurring merchant can remain simple while an important ruler, rival, or story character can have a much deeper profile.

NPC PROFILE STYLES
The same six profile styles available to characters are available to NPCs.
Gorean
For NPCs participating in Gorean communities and the Gor Ultima roleplay ecosystem.
Standard RP
A general-purpose profile for recurring non-player characters that do not require setting-specific Gorean or fantasy labels.
Fantasy RP
Useful for fantasy races, factions, professions, kingdoms, guilds, cultures, and other world-building structures.
Tabletop D&D
A tabletop-oriented profile for campaign NPCs, contacts, allies, enemies, quest-givers, and other recurring campaign identities.
Modern / Sci-Fi RP
For contemporary, futuristic, technological, science-fiction, cyberpunk, military, or other non-fantasy settings.
Custom / Freeform
For settings that need maximum flexibility without relying on a predefined field structure.

SWITCHING NPC PROFILE STYLES
Different profile styles can keep their own stored data.

NPC profile styles use isolated template storage.

An owner can enter information while an NPC uses the Gorean profile, switch the NPC to Standard RP, add different information there, and later return to Gorean without intentionally destroying the previously stored Gorean fields.

This allows the same NPC record to survive profile experimentation, migrations, or different presentation needs without forcing the owner to rebuild earlier work each time the selected style changes.

CUSTOM NPC FIELDS
Every roleplay world has details no universal template could predict.

Each NPC can store up to 12 custom label/value fields.

These fields are useful for information such as:

  • faction or organization;
  • city or Home Stone;
  • caste or profession;
  • ship or unit assignment;
  • supernatural lineage;
  • political allegiance;
  • relationship to a player character;
  • story status;
  • local titles;
  • campaign-specific information;
  • any other setting-specific fact that does not belong in the standard template.

Custom fields allow a community to adapt GorBot to its world without requiring a new hard-coded profile template for every special case.

NPC PORTRAITS
A recurring NPC is easier to remember when players can recognize the face attached to the name.

The NPC Database supports portrait images as part of NPC presentation.

The existing NPC image workflow supports direct uploads and image downscaling for oversized portraits. This makes it easier to keep NPC images usable without requiring every owner to manually resize artwork before uploading it.

Uploaded portraits can be used by the NPC Database and supported public NPC profile presentation.

OWNERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
NPCs can be shared with a community without becoming ownerless records.
Owner Editing
The NPC owner can reopen and edit the NPC as its role, story, relationships, or presentation changes.
Owner Deletion
Owners can remove NPC records they control when those records are no longer needed.
Administrative Control
Authorized Owner/Bot Commander administration can remove NPC records when broader community management or moderation requires it.

CLONING NPCS
Create a new record from an existing foundation instead of starting from nothing.

The NPC Database supports cloning.

Cloning is useful when several NPCs share a common foundation, such as:

  • guards belonging to the same city;
  • members of the same caste or guild;
  • related family members;
  • soldiers from the same unit;
  • merchants using a common business structure;
  • recurring archetypes in a campaign.

The clone becomes a separate NPC record that can then be edited independently.

GLOBAL NPC DATABASE
Some NPCs can become useful beyond the server where they were first created.

NPC owners can publish eligible NPCs into GorBot's global NPC database.

The global list is designed for browsing and discovery across the broader GorBot environment. It supports pagination and name-based searching so published NPCs can remain practical to find as the database grows.

Publishing does not remove ownership. The NPC remains associated with its owner while becoming discoverable through the global listing.

This can support shared roleplay resources, recurring world identities, reference NPCs, and communities that want to make selected NPC profiles available outside one local server view.

SHARING AND PUBLIC NPC PROFILES
Give players a clean reference page without making them search through old Discord posts.

Supported NPC sharing allows a public-facing profile to present selected NPC information outside the private management view.

Public presentation is built around the NPC's stored profile information and is designed to show meaningful populated data rather than long lists of empty fields.

Public/share access remains separate from private ownership and edit authorization. A shared NPC profile is a presentation of the record, not permission for another user to modify it.

CLEAN PROFILE PRESENTATION
NPC profiles should look intentional even when only a few details are known.

NPC profile rendering follows the same filled-only approach used by characters.

Empty fields are omitted from normal presentation. Historical synthetic defaults are also suppressed unless they were explicitly stored as intentional NPC information.

This allows the same profile framework to support both a lightly-documented tavern keeper and a deeply-developed political figure without making either profile look unfinished.

NPCS AND PLAYER CHARACTERS
They share a profile engine, but they serve different roles in the community.
Player-owned roleplay identities attached to a Discord account and managed through the Character Library.
NPCs
Non-player roleplay identities managed through the NPC Database, with dedicated ownership, cloning, sharing, publishing, and future intelligent-NPC possibilities.

THE FUTURE OF INTELLIGENT NPCS
The database is also a foundation for NPCs that may eventually do more than display a profile.

GorBot's long-term development includes deeper AI and NPC functionality.

The NPC Database provides an important foundation for that future by giving an NPC a persistent identity that can hold descriptive information, ownership, profile data, and other structured state.

Future intelligent-NPC work may build upon these identities so selected NPCs can participate more actively in roleplay through memory, adaptive behavior, conversation, or connected game-world functionality.

These advanced intelligent-NPC possibilities are part of ongoing and future development. They should not be confused with the currently available NPC profile, database, sharing, and management features described above.

NPCS IN THE GOR ULTIMA ECOSYSTEM
A shared identity layer can help connect Discord roleplay, the web, and the game world.

GorBot and Gor Ultima are part of the same larger project.

The RunUO side provides the persistent game world, while GorBot extends the project into Discord, web-based roleplay, community management, character profiles, NPC records, and automation.

The NPC Database helps provide a structured identity layer for the roleplay side of that ecosystem. Where future game-side integration is appropriate, those persistent identities can also provide a clearer foundation for connecting Discord-facing NPC concepts with the wider Gor Ultima world.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Useful answers now, and a foundation for the future GorBot Support section.
Do I need to fill in every NPC field?
No. Empty fields are omitted from normal presentation. A simple NPC can remain simple.
Can I change an NPC's profile style later?
Yes. Style-specific profile data is stored independently so switching styles does not intentionally erase the previous style's saved values.
Can I add fields GorBot does not provide?
Yes. Each NPC can store up to 12 custom label/value fields.
Can I make a copy of an NPC?
Yes. The NPC Database supports cloning so a new NPC can begin from an existing record and then be edited independently.
Can other people edit my NPC?
Public sharing does not grant edit rights. NPC ownership and authorized administrative controls remain separate from public presentation.
Are the AI NPC features already live?
The persistent NPC Database is live functionality. Deeper intelligent/Living NPC behavior is a separate area of ongoing and future development.

A living world remembers the people who inhabit it — even the ones no player controls.
Create them. Preserve them. Share them. Let recurring NPCs become part of the history of the world.
The NPC Database is one part of GorBot's larger roleplay, community, and future intelligent-NPC ecosystem.
